Drake Maye likely to begin on bench

Patriots fans, don’t be surprised if you don’t have Drake Maye under center in Week 1 of the 2024 season.

Rookie minicamp is underway, but Jacoby Brissett, who is not New England’s No. 1 draft pick, is the favorite to be the Pats’ starting quarterback when the NFL opens in four months.

Brissett, who signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the Patriots in March, will start ahead of Maye at -200 at DraftKings Sportsbook.

The 31-year-old veteran was drafted by the team in the third round of the 2016 draft and returns to New England after serving as the Commanders’ backup quarterback last season.

Maye, selected by the Patriots with the third overall pick in April’s draft, is +150 and will be the team’s QB1 in Week 1.

In two seasons at North Carolina, Maye threw for 7,929 yards and 62 touchdowns, completing 64.7 percent of his passes with 16 interceptions, and also rushed for 1,147 yards and 16 touchdowns, leading the way in a loaded class. Brissett is currently the betting favorite, but some within the organization believe Maye can win the job out of training camp. According to the Boston Herald.

New Englanders will no doubt be disappointed if Maye isn’t given the reins right away, but oddsmakers expect Maye to get plenty of playing time in his rookie season.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Maye’s passing yards over/under for the season is 2,650.5, indicating that Brissett may be just a stopgap as the Pats’ starting quarterback.

If he can get close to that number, Maye will be on the field quite a bit.

Maye is also a candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year at +2000, the sixth-best odds in the league.
