More than half of the foreign-born immigrant population in the United States under President Joe Biden is unemployed, according to a recent report.
The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) report Only 46% of immigrants who arrived in the U.S. in 2022 and beyond were employed as of early 2024, according to Monday’s announcement.
CIS researchers Stephen Camarota and Karen Zeigler say, “Immigrants clearly add workers to this country, but just as clearly they add non-workers who are supported by the labor of others.” writing.
This has been true in the past, is true today, and will certainly be true for immigrants arriving in the future. Those who view immigration solely as a source of labor need to understand that immigrants are also a source of school children, retirees, and many other non-workers.
The data in the CIS report undermines the argument that supporters of illegal immigration have been trying to make: that immigrant workers help the economy by working hard.

The report also found that the U.S. immigrant population has increased by about 6.6 million people in the 39 months since Biden took office in January 2021.
As of March 2024, there were 51.6 million foreign-born immigrants, an increase of 5.1 million from 2022. This figure accounts for her 15.6% of the US population.
“Many advocates for undocumented people argue that they should be granted work permits to support themselves while awaiting trial,” the researchers wrote in the report. “Of course, some worry that this will only lead to more illegal immigration. In 2024, the continuing border crisis will result in a higher proportion of unauthorized new arrivals than in previous years. did.”
A separate report released by CIS in February found that while Biden’s job gains were centered on hiring millions of foreign-born immigrants, the number of Americans with jobs has increased due to COVID-19 infections. decreased from previous levels.
