Jared Goff’s lofty goals after signing big four-year Lions extension

Jared Goff revealed he has unfinished business in Detroit ahead of news of his blockbuster four-year contract extension earlier this week.

The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback and the Lions have agreed to a new contract worth up to $212 million with $170 million guaranteed, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said. reported on Monday.

Goff was scheduled to become a free agent after the 2024 season.

“It’s been a lot of fun for me to be a part of building this from the ground up for the last three years and being able to win a district title and some home playoff games. But now we’re going to do it. We want a little bit more and we hope to be the last team left there at the end of the year,” the 29-year-old Goff told the Post last month when discussing the partnership with the paper. jared jewelers.

Goff’s extension came as no surprise to many after a strong 2023 season in which he finished second in passing yards (4,575) and fourth in passing touchdowns (30).

Last season, the Lions went 12-5 and won the NFC North, losing 34-31 to the 49ers en route to the NFC Championship Game.

Before that, Goff led the Lions to their first playoff victory in 32 years, defeating Matthew Stafford’s Rams 24-23 in the wild-card game.

This was important because Goff was traded to the Lions in January 2021 in a blockbuster trade with Stafford and the Rams.

The Lions’ recent success has raised the bar for the 2024 campaign.

“Internal standards and expectations are going to go up, and obviously externally, external expectations are going to go up, similar to what we did last year,” Goff said. “But internally, we recognize that we need to go even further and that this will require more cooperation and a lot of effort from everyone going forward.

“We’re kind of in the early stages of our offseason program. So it’s good to start now and be with the players and take that time and work on what’s going to be a great year.”

Goff expects tight end Sam LaPorta and running back Jahmil Gibbs to make strides in their second year.

“They both had great rookie years, they both always say the biggest jump is between year one and year two. So if those two guys make the jump, we’ll be in pretty good shape. “I guess so,” Goff said. “It was a lot of fun playing and working with both of them.”

Goff explained how experiencing the trials and tribulations in Detroit helped him grow. The Lions had a record of 3 wins, 13 losses, and 1 draw in his first season with the club in 2021.

“I think for me personally, you have to come here and go through some lumps. You have to understand things a little bit and you have to learn a lot about yourself.” Goff said. “You have to know what you’re made of, and that’s what makes you grow. It forces you to be better in every aspect of life – and that was certainly the case here. [in Detroit]. And I love my fans. I love their care and passion.

“But you have to figure things out and you have to learn how to deal with difficult times. And I have really great family and friends who have been around me through it all. But There were some really tough times and you just have to learn how to get through them and come out the other side.”
