Meryl Streep reflected on her famous shampoo scene with Robert Redford in the 1985 film Out of Africa.
In this epic romantic drama, Streep plays a Danish baroness who falls in love with a big-game hunter played by Redford while running a coffee plantation in colonial South Africa.
In a memorable scene in the film, Redford gently washes Streep’s hair by the river while reciting a passage from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.”

Streep recalled that Redford was initially concerned for their safety and did not wash their hair well.
“It wasn’t good,” she admitted.
But Roy Helland, Streep’s longtime hairstylist and makeup artist, intervened and demonstrated how he usually washes the actress’ hair, which Streep called “the best time of the day.” expressed.

Out of Africa won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Pollack.
During a 1985 interview with the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Streep praised Redford, telling the magazine that she found him “very attractive.”

“We really got to know each other after he arrived in Africa,” she said. “I had a huge crush on him, so it was easy to do a love story. He’s really great to work with.”

In a conversation at the Debussy Theater, the three-time Academy Award winner expressed how touched she was by the warm reception she received at the Palme d’Or presentation.
