A man’s plan to ambush a couple walking on a Queens street backfired Wednesday, when the pair diverted the attack and left the man with multiple stab wounds, police said.
The 37-year-old attacker sneaked up behind the pair as they were walking their young dog near 49th Street and Broadway in Woodside around 2:45 p.m., the NYPD said.
Surveillance camera footage shows the suspect throwing his coat on the ground and then plunging at another man who was riding a scooter alongside a woman who was holding a puppy due to a leg injury.
But the element of surprise didn’t work in the assailant’s favor and he was quickly put into a headlock, the video shows.
The apparent victim, a man wearing a medical boot on his right foot, threw his assailant to the ground and began punching him, and the woman soon joined him in the mission.
The suspect desperately tried to escape, but the couple continued punching and kicking the would-be attacker while dragging the dog with them.
The three eventually separated, but continued to scream at each other and seemed ready to return to fighting.
The victim took several steps back toward the security camera, which showed a shocking bloody wound near the top of his head.
That’s when several bystanders, who appeared unfazed during the altercation, stepped between the couple and the man.
The first assailant was taken to Elmhurst Hospital with multiple stab wounds all over his body, the NYPD said. His condition is stable.
No arrests have been made in this case, but officials say police are investigating two perpetrators.
