House GOP’s top-line figure for 2025 government funding to drop this week

Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, said Wednesday that House Republicans will release a proposed cap on government funding for most of 2025 later this week.

Cole said Wednesday afternoon that the powerful funding committee aims to release the highest amount by Thursday, similar to House Republicans’ proposed apportionment for the year’s 12 government funding bills.

The Chair said the numbers would allow the committee to move from October 2024 to September 2025, as the committee aims to follow a tight schedule of passing all 12 bills out of committee over the summer. It said it could jump-start government funding efforts for the fiscal year. Despite getting off to a slow start this year.

“This gives us a starting point and we’re going to set a timeline,” Cole told The Hill, adding that the goal is “to get all the bills out of committee by the August recess.” That’s it,” he added.

Cole also said the commission could begin raising prices next week as it considers proposed allocations and other work.

“We’re looking to get at least one of these things done by the end of May and then have a very aggressive schedule before the August break,” Cole said, adding that more information will be announced on Thursday. Deaf added.

Congress must pass legislation to keep the lights on or risk closure by late September, when current government funding expires.

But Congress finished its fiscal year 2024 funding effort several months later than scheduled, and temporary funding is expected to be needed in September.
