Scottie Scheffler tees off for PGA Championship’s 2nd round after arrest

Hours after his arrest, Scottie Scheffler teed off on the 10th hole of the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Course in Kentucky.

When his name was announced and Scheffler walked towards the tee box, he received a huge round of applause.

Scheffler returned to the course an hour before tee time. Tied for 12th place at the start of the second round, he made his statement. His first stroke fell just outside the fairway.

“This morning I was acting on instructions from a police officer. It was a very chaotic situation, which is understandable given the tragic accident that had occurred earlier. “There was a big misunderstanding about that,” he said. He said. “I had no intention of ignoring the instructions. Today I want to put that aside and focus on golf.”

“Of course, all of us involved in the tournament extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man who died in this morning’s accident. This really puts everything in perspective.”

He was with Windham Clark and Brian Harman.

“It’s just a wild morning,” Herman told ESPN’s Marty Smith.

ESPN reported that Scheffler drove past the officers in an SUV with markings on the door identifying it as a PGA Championship vehicle. The officer yelled for him to stop and held on to the car until Scheffler stopped after about 10 yards. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington characterized it as a “miscommunication of traffic flow” as authorities investigated the early morning traffic fatality.

“Scheffler was then walked to a patrol car, handcuffed and put in the back, very stunned by what was going on, and still handcuffed, he looked towards me,” Darlington said on ESPN. “I saw it and said, ‘Please help me,'” he said. sports Center. “He had no idea what was going on in the situation. Things moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively.”

“Now he’s going to jail,” one of the officers at the scene told Darlington. “He’s going to go to jail and there’s nothing he can do about it.”

Scheffler was booked into the Louisville Department of Corrections late Friday. He was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer (a felony), criminal mischief, reckless driving, and failing a traffic-directing officer.

Scheffler had won four of his past five tournaments, including his second Masters title. He has been at his home in Dallas for the past three weeks awaiting the birth of his first child on May 8th.

At the end of the first round, Xander Schauffele was in the lead. He was 9 under par. Sahis Segala, Tony Finau and Mark Hubbard tied for second at 6 under.
