Speaker Johnson calls out MTG, AOC over fiery exchange: ‘Not a good look’

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) condemned the heated House hearing following the House member’s remarks. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Marjorie Taylor Greene slammed the need for members to be civil.

“This is not good for Parliament,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson told reporters on Friday.

The Republican Party chairman chided both parties, saying that while “lively debate” was welcome, “we must treat each other with dignity and respect.”

“Civility is an important principle to maintain,” he said.

“And we need people on both sides of the aisle who will just take the emotion out of us. We can have a lively discussion. That’s the foundation of this organization. But, you know, we can’t help each other. “You have to treat them with respect, dignity and respect,” Johnson said.

The hearing quickly spiraled out of control after Greene opened fire on her Democratic colleague, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Missouri).

“Do you know what we’re here for?” Mr. Crockett asked Mr. Green, but Mr. Green retorted. “I think your false eyelashes are ruining what you’re reading.”

Ocasio-Cortez similarly opined: “I want to move to retract Ms. Greene’s words because I have a point of order. It is absolutely unacceptable to attack someone else’s appearance. How dare you…move her.” He paused. ”

“Are your feelings hurt?” Green asked.

“Oh, girl, girl!” Ocasio-Cortez fired back. “Don’t play!”

Ocasio-Cortez called for Greene’s comments to be “deleted.” This is a procedure that gives the speaker the opportunity to retract or amend his or her statement if it is deemed incorrect.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) ruled that the comments did not violate House rules that prohibit engaging in “personalities” during debate.

The hearing resulted in a 24-20 vote along party lines recommending that Attorney General Merrick Garland be held in contempt.

Crockett reacted to the uproar at X.

“You mean MTG wants to talk about my appearance on COMMITTEE?!” Crockett said of When you get there, this is what happens!”

“Disagreements are part of our democracy, but the hearing devolved into blatant slurs and insults about members’ appearance,” Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) wrote in X. “No American deserves this mess in Congress.”
