When President Joe Biden delivered a commencement speech Sunday at Morehouse College, a historically black college and the alma mater of Martin Luther King Jr., some students turned away.

At least three Morehouse alumni were shown in the photo with their backs turned, according to an X post by a pro-Trump super PAC. One of them wore a keffiyeh scarf in solidarity with the Palestinians.
A member of the press traveling with Biden confirmed seeing one of the students standing behind the ceremony with his back turned and his right fist raised. Poole said “several” graduates and faculty members wore keffiyeh scarves.

Biden called October’s Hamas attack on Israel “vicious” and mentioned “hostages” taken by the attack, but he focused more on the “humanitarian crisis in Gaza” and called for an “immediate ceasefire.” “They should speak up,” he told the students. “I support peaceful, nonviolent protests. Your voice will be heard. And I promise you, I’m hearing it,” he said.
Biden’s appearance at Morehouse was aimed at strengthening support among black voters in the United States, seen as a key constituency for the Democratic Party in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
Recent polls show Biden’s support among black voters is declining.
