President Joe Biden’s approval rating fell to its lowest level in nearly two years in May, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Tuesday, raising concerns about his reelection.
Historically, presidents need an approval rating of about 50 percent to win reelection.
Just 36% of voters support Biden, down two points from April and matching his all-time low approval rating as of July 2022.
The economic downturn is the top issue for Americans (23%), as per Mr. Biden’s headlines, while political extremism is the top issue for 21% of respondents, followed by open borders (13%).
When asked who managed the economy better, Trump won by 10 points over Biden (40% to 30%).
Trump also had a significant lead on border security. Mr. Trump led Mr. Biden by 42%, while Mr. Biden had just 25%.
Reuters did not immediately reveal the sample size of U.S. adults. margin of error was 3 percentage points.
The poll was the latest negative poll against Biden. A number of recent polls show Biden losing support among the demographics that were key to his 2020 victory.
- NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist: A majority of independent voters believe Biden is a greater threat to democracy than Trump.
- ABC News/Ipsos: President Trump is in a close race with Biden among suburban women.
- USA Today/Suffolk University: Trump among Hispanics lead Biden won by 5 points (39-34%).
- wall street journal: 30% of black men and 11% of black women plan to vote for Trump.
- new york timesTrump and Biden are roughly equal among 18-29 year olds.
Biden’s allies are panicking. CNN: ‘This should be a wake-up call’ van jones Said last week. “Young people are upset. And it’s not just the situation in Gaza. The economic outlook for young people is dire.”
The poll is “understandably causing panic among Democrats,” says The New Republic’s Alex Shepard report. “Voters know Joe Biden and have decided that they don’t think he’s capable of handling the job of president in a second term.”
“But I don’t see how Mr. Biden can reverse this perception,” Shepherd continued. “Biden will not be any younger on Election Day, and there is not much he can do to allay concerns about his age.”
