Rare tornado hits Haiti, injuring more than 50 people and leaving hundreds homeless

A rare tornado has struck northern Haiti, injuring more than 50 people and destroying more than 200 homes, the United Nations said Wednesday.

A tornado struck the community of Bassin Bleu on Tuesday, leaving more than 300 families homeless, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Authorities said at least 10 people were seriously injured, and local media reported they were hospitalized.

The office said Haiti’s civil defense agency and the Red Cross were first to respond and were assessing the damage.

The Civil Protection Department warned that heavy rain is expected in most parts of Haiti, including the tornado-hit areas, with the possibility of flooding and landslides.
