Indiana Fever star Kaitlyn Clark is “more approachable to a lot more people because she’s white,” ABC legal analyst Sunny Hostin said Wednesday on ABC’s “The View.”
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg said, “She’s the NCAA’s all-time men’s and women’s scoring record. In February she broke the women’s record and in March she broke pistol Pete Maravich’s record of 3,667 points. She has more games of 30 or more points than anyone in the last 25 years. She also holds the men’s record for three-pointers in a season and the Big Ten record for assists. Listen up. People who say things like this are the same as saying you got into an Ivy League school because you’re black or you got in because of this. This girl, I’m sorry, there are great players out there, but no one else has done anything like this.”
Hostin said, “I’ve been a basketball fan for as long as I can remember. I played basketball with my dad in Harlem when I was 5 years old. So I remember loving basketball. But basketball hasn’t always loved women, right? The WNBA started in 1996, the first game was in 1997. Now it’s 2024, and we’re finally having serious conversations about it. So if Caitlin Clark is a vehicle for bringing this sport that I’ve loved for so long to 5-year-old girls playing in Harlem, I say, ‘Yeah, bravo.’ I have no problem with that. That being said, I do think there’s such a thing as beauty privilege. There’s such a thing as white privilege. There’s such a thing as tall privilege. And we have to acknowledge that. So part of it is about race. Because when you think about the Britney Griners of the world, why did she have to play in Russia?”
“Not because she was black, but because they didn’t believe in the WNBA,” Goldberg said.
Hostin said: Well, so now Caitlin Clark is bringing this money and sponsorship to the league and hopes other players will benefit from it too. However, since she is white and attractive, I think she would be more relatable to more people, but unfortunately there is still prejudice against the LGBTQ community. ”
