Cruz on Haley backing Trump: ‘I understand that journey’

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said he sympathizes with former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who said this week she will vote for former President Trump rather than President Biden in the November presidential election.

“I understand the journey, I’ve been in that position,” Cruz said. He said during the performance On CNN Wednesday night: “She didn’t win any states, but she was the last person there. I understand she fought a hard-fought primary. I’ve been in that position myself.”

Haley, who was seen as one of Trump’s leading contenders for the 2024 Republican nomination until she suspended her campaign in early March, said at an event at the Hudson Institute early Wednesday that she was determined to “prioritize a president who supports our allies, holds our enemies accountable, secures our borders and tolerates no excuses.”

Haley added that while Trump “wasn’t perfect” on various policies, “Biden was a disaster,” and suggested that her decision to support the former president this fall was based largely on that.

Cruz, along with many other candidates, ran against Trump for the Republican nomination in 2016 and was the last person to acknowledge that the former president would win the nomination that year.

He said his decision to support Trump in 2016 was based on his belief that “I support people who say they’re going to do good and I do everything I can to encourage them to do good things.”
