Chiefs star Travis Kelce echoed teammate Pat Mahomes’ comments about Harrison Butker’s commencement speech in which he defended Christian values. He praised Butker as a teammate and a person, but stressed that he didn’t agree with everything Butker said.
Speaking to graduating seniors at Benedictine University’s commencement ceremony earlier this month, Butker slammed President Biden’s pro-abortion policies, criticized Pride Month, urged men to embrace their masculinity and told women that motherhood is ultimately more important than their careers.
Kelsey spoke about Butker’s speech on his podcast, “New Heights.” The discussion of Butker begins at the 24:55 mark.
“I value him as a teammate. [Chiefs quarterback] Pat [Mahomes] He was a really great guy and a great teammate, he said it well.
“He has treated his family and the families I have introduced him to with respect and kindness, and he treats everyone the same. His views and what he said in his commencement speech at St. Benedict are his. I can say I agree with most, if not all, of it, except that he loves his family and his children. And I don’t think we should judge him by his views, especially his religious views on how to live life. That’s not my character.”
Chiefs quarterback Pat Mahomes addressed Butker’s comments during overtime activities earlier this week.
“While I don’t necessarily agree with some of the things he says, I understand his character and he tries to do whatever he can to steer people in the right direction. Those may not be the same as my values, but at the same time, I judge him by the character he shows every day. He’s a great guy. We’re going to continue to move forward and lift each other up and try to be better every day.”
BREAKING: Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes strongly defended kicker Harrison Butker’s speech in support of traditional values.
When a reporter tried to argue that Butker was speaking “badly” about women, Reid also hit back.

“But at the end of the day, we’re going to come together as a team, and I think that helps eliminate distractions outside the building as well.”
