Former President Trump is scheduled to speak at the Libertarian Party National Convention in Washington, DC on Saturday.
Trump’s comments came a day after independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy spoke to a crowd and questioned the former president’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic during his time in office. Kennedy argued that the Trump administration violated people’s First Amendment rights when it enacted health guidelines to combat the pandemic.
Trump fired back in a tirade on Saturday, urging his supporters not to “waste” their votes on unlikely candidates and claiming his campaign is failing.
The exchange also comes after Mr Kennedy invited the two men to debate at the party’s convention, and the former president’s surprise decision to appear at the event highlights the potential threat Mr Kennedy poses to his reforms.
Trump is scheduled to speak at 8 p.m. EDT.
