Uvalde Families Sue Daniel Defense, Meta, ‘Call of Duty’ Maker

Families of students killed in the May 24, 2022, Uvalde school shooting filed multiple wrongful death lawsuits in Texas and California on Friday targeting AR-15 maker Daniel Defense, Meta Platforms and Activision, maker of the “Call of Duty” video game.

Meta is the parent company of Instagram.

CBS News report “The lawsuit was filed by attorney Josh Koskoff.”

Koskoff is the lawyer who successfully sued Remington over the stolen rifles that were used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School attack.

Associated Press (AP) Quote In the Uvalde lawsuit, Koskoff pointed to Daniel Defense, Meta and Activision, saying, “There is a direct connection between the actions of these companies and the Uvalde shooting… This three-headed monster knowingly exposed him to a weapon, conditioned him to see it as a tool to solve problems, and trained him to use it.”

The AP article noted:

The lawsuit said the Uvalde shooter began playing various Call of Duty games as early as age 15, some of which allowed him to effectively practice using the rifle patterns he used in school. The family also accused Instagram of doing little to enforce its rules banning marketing of firearms and content harmful to children.

The Uvalde shooter set up an online account with Daniel Defense before his 18th birthday and purchased a rifle as soon as he could, according to the criminal complaint.

“At the same time, Instagram was luring shooters in with blatant and aggressive marketing. In addition to hundreds of images depicting and glorifying the thrill of combat, Daniel Defense used Instagram to celebrate the illegal and deadly use of weapons,” the family’s lawyers said in a statement.

A $500 million lawsuit was also filed Wednesday against some Texas law enforcement departments for their response to the shooting, specifically the delays of police in confronting the shooter and ending the attack.
