Tributes for Grayson Murray pour in from golf stars: ‘Loss for words’

On Saturday, the golf world was collectively shaken by one of the worst reasons: the death of Grayson Murray at age 30.

The two-time PGA Tour winner withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge on Friday, citing illness, two holes before the end of the second round. He finished five over par for the day with three consecutive bogeys and was +3 overall for the tournament.

“We are heartbroken to learn that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning and are heartbroken to share that news. There are no words to express it,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. wrote in the statement.

“The PGA Tour is a family, and when we lose a member of our family, it’s never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Many players on the PGA Tour and LIV Tour paid tribute on social media.

“I’m speechless… I’m so shocked! We’ve played a few practice rounds together this year, been paired up in multiple tournaments… we’ve shared a lot of fun times!” Rickie Fowler wrote on InstagramShe shared a photo of the pair on the course together, writing: “My heartfelt prayers go out to your family and close friends… I wish there was something I could have done! You will be missed!”

Added Justin Rose to X. Previously Twitter, “No one knows what challenges someone faces in life or how they internalize it. Rest in peace Grayson. Love and strength to your family and friends.”

Scottie Scheffler said after the third round that he was “praying fervently” for Murray’s family.

“I can’t imagine what a difficult time this must be. I’ve gotten to know Grayson better over the last six months or so. It’s hard to put into words the sadness and tragedy, but my thoughts are with his family,” he said.

Murray has previously struggled with depression and anxiety and had been treated for alcoholism, saying in January he had been sober for several months. According to NBC SportsHe opened up about his struggles last year.

“Everybody has their struggles, and sometimes you can hide them and get by, and sometimes you can’t.” He said“And, you know, I think our society has gotten better at accepting that type of deal now of ‘it’s okay to not be okay’ and I’ve embraced that mindset and I’m not ashamed to go through depression or anxiety and I’ve helped people in the past through direct messages on social media. People will message me and I think that’s just a part of me. [how] I can use my platform to continue to help with that.”

The cause of death has not been made public.

He has qualified for both major championships this year, winning last week PGA Championship T43.

He also finished T10 at the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this month.
