The relationship between caddie and golfer is more than just a friendship, and Grayson Murray’s caddie, Jay Green, is missing his companion after the PGA Tour star committed suicide, a fact Murray’s family confirmed Sunday.

Murray’s parents, Eric and Terry, released a statement confirming that their son, a two-time PGA Tour winner, including this season’s Sony Open, “took his own life” on Saturday, the day after completing the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Green posted a tribute to Murray on Instagram, calling him “the best.”

“G Money you were so awesome,” Green wrote in a post along with a photo of the two kissing the Sony Open trophy. “I love you brother. I miss you already. Thanks for the memories. May your soul rest in peace.”

Green also spoke to the Golf Channel about Murray’s selfless nature.

“Grayson was absolutely the best,” Green said. “Not only was he an incredibly caring and generous boss, but he was also an amazing friend. He would really do anything for anyone.”

“He has the best family and my heart goes out to them. We will all miss him terribly.”

Another member of Murray’s golf team, swing coach Ted Kiegel, posted a moving tribute to his student.

“I am completely devastated and heartbroken by the loss of Grayson,” he wrote to X. “He was family. He was more than family. We were kindred spirits and shared many triumphs and life moments, even as we suffered through downturns that tested his very nature. We relied on each other and found strength in each other. We spent countless hours together over 20 years and knew each other well.”

“It was an honor to serve as your coach and mentor. You will be truly missed and your memories will be with you forever…”

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan told reporters he spoke with Murray’s family on Saturday and suggested play be canceled at the Charles Schwab Challenge as a public memorial for Murray.

But Murray’s parents wanted the game to go on, and they demanded that each player wear a red-and-black ribbon on his hat, a nod to the colors of the Carolina Hurricanes, the NHL team from his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, that Murray regularly wears on Sundays.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It feels surreal that we have to admit this not only to ourselves but to the world. It’s a nightmare,” Murray’s parents said. It said in a statement.

“There are so many unanswered questions, but one,” they continued, “Was Grayson loved? Yes. He was loved by us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, his friends, his fellow players, and apparently many of you reading this. He was loved and will be missed.”
