A dozen injured during turbulence on Qatar Airways flight

Airport authorities said 12 passengers and crew were injured when a Qatar Airways plane encountered turbulence on its way to Dublin on Sunday.

The plane, which came from Doha, landed at Dublin airport just before 1pm and emergency services responded after six passengers and six crew members reported injuries, Dublin Airport said on Sunday. Social Platform X.

The airport said 12 people were tested on board, eight of whom were taken to hospital.

According to the statement, Qatar Airways flight QR017 encountered turbulence while flying over Turkey.

The return flight to Doha was due to take off normally on Sunday afternoon and air operations at Dublin airport were not affected by the incident, the airport said.

A few days ago, a Singapore Airlines plane encountered severe turbulence over the Indian Ocean, killing one passenger and injuring dozens, forcing the flight to make an abrupt landing in Bangkok.

The accident has raised questions about turbulence and whether passengers should expect more turbulence as the jet stream strengthens due to climate change.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned Sunday that climate change is already affecting transportation, noting that while accidents like the Singapore Airlines crash are “rare,” the US needs to be better prepared to adapt to a changing climate.

“We’ve seen it in everything from statistically impossible heat waves that could melt cables in the Pacific Northwest’s transportation system, to an intensified hurricane season, to signs of about a 15 percent increase in turbulence, which means we need to evaluate anything we can do,” he said in an interview Sunday on CBS News’ “Face the Nation.”
