4-year-old boy drowns in New Jersey home’s pool: officials

A 4-year-old boy drowned in a residential pool in North Brunswick, New Jersey, Saturday night, according to local authorities.

Police received a 911 call at 7:46 p.m. reporting the boy had been found in the home’s swimming pool and not breathing, and paramedics found him, they said in a joint statement Sunday. Middlesex County Prosecutor With Yolanda Ciccone North Brunswick Police Department Chief Joseph Battaglia.

Authorities performed CPR but were unable to save the boy, authorities said.

The boy, whose name has not been released, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“We are heartbroken by this tragic loss,” Ciccone and Battaglia said in a statement. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family during this incredibly difficult time, and we urge everyone to ensure the safety of all children near water.”

Authorities did not release any details about the tragedy, including the address where it happened, how the boy got into the pool or whether he lived at the home.

Both North Brunswick Police and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating.

The nonprofit urges families to “safeguard their pools with proper fencing,” “designate water lifeguards and stay within reach of small children,” and advises that if a child goes missing, “check the water first.”
