An Ohio billionaire plans to visit the ill-fated Titanic aboard a $20 million submarine to prove the industry is safe after last year’s tragic Ocean Gate collapse.
Real estate investor Larry Conner Said of The Wall Street Journal He’s teaming up with Triton Submarines co-founder Patrick Lahey to travel to the Titanic in a two-person submersible, hoping to prove that the ocean can also be an “amazing and fun” place.
“I want to show the world that the ocean is extremely powerful but if approached in the right way it can also be an amazing, fun and truly life-changing thing,” Connor said.
The Triton submarine, the Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer, cost $20 million to build.
“Patrick has been thinking about this and designing it for over 10 years, but we didn’t have the materials or the technology,” Connor said. “We couldn’t have built this submarine five years ago.”
Patrick Lahey had previously criticized OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, saying Rush used predatory tactics to lure wealthy clients onto the ship. He said the ship’s carbon fiber hull created the conditions necessary for a catastrophic explosion, killing five people, including Rush himself.

As Breitbart News reported last year:
Renowned submarine expert Patrick Lahey said OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush had been “predatory” in recruiting passengers for the Titanic dive.
Lahey, president of Triton Submarines, said Rush had a hard time finding wealthy customers to make diving profitable. Times report.
Investor Jay Bloom said Rush offered him and his son $250,000 tickets “last minute” for $150,000 each just weeks before the dive, the Daily Mail reported. reportBloom said he decided to back out after Rush flew to Las Vegas in a “two-seater experimental aircraft he built himself” and persuaded him to join the dive.
As a result of fundamental design flaws that Lahey deemed a “monstrosity,” Stockton’s Titan submersible was never certified.
