An Indiana man facing attempted murder charges in a grocery store shooting told police he had “always wanted to kill someone.”

Suspect Richard Clough Jr., 20, was arrested in connection with Thursday’s shooting at the Kroger on East State Boulevard in Fort Wayne and is currently charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of negligent operation resulting in death, which could carry a sentence of 126 years in prison.

According to a Fort Wayne police affidavit, WPTA reported that Clough Jr. did a Facebook Live stream in the store’s bathroom, telling viewers he was going to shoot 11 people, then left the bathroom and into a common area.

He pulled out a gold and black handgun and instructed his livestream viewers to record their screens.

According to court records, Clough Jr. walked through the store asking viewers who they should shoot, and as he passed an older man, he can be heard saying, “I’m not gonna kill an old man.”

Clough Jr. walked around the store and continued to show the gun to viewers.

“I’m going to go out with a bang,” he said.

According to court documents, the suspect repeatedly said “I found it” as he approached the bread section of the store, then brandished a handgun and shot a customer and two employees before fleeing the scene yelling profanities and racial slurs.

Clough Jr. fled the scene and made it to a bank across the street, where he was caught and taken into custody by police, who found his gun, cellphone and wallet in a trash can at a nearby store, according to court documents.

Investigators found two waist-high bullet holes just to the right of where the victims were standing when Clough Jr. fired his gun, as well as two bullet holes in the wall above the kitchen door.

According to court records, when police questioned Clough Jr., he asked if anyone had died. Detectives asked him if he was shooting at anyone in particular, but Clough Jr. said he didn’t want to shoot old people. They then asked how many people he had shot.

Clough Jr. told police he chose the people he shot because they were standing in an area with no place to hide.

He also told police that he had “always wanted to kill someone.”

“That’s all I wanted to do. I was supposed to go into the military,” said Clough Jr. “Obviously, I couldn’t wait.”

Clough Jr. is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
