She told Hare she had a boyfriend, but acknowledged that there was a reason she approached him: “It’s not your fault. What harm is it if I play the system? You know? That’s the way I see it.”

Hare then warned him to keep such comments to himself. “Don’t say that now,” Hare is heard saying, according to the recording. “It’s all on tape right now, so don’t say that now.”

Rather than proceed directly to the detention center, Hare walked a few blocks away into a residential area and parked his car just after 1:30 a.m. on August 15. His body camera was then turned off.

About 20 minutes later, Hare made a frantic call to a fellow officer, whose recollection of the conversation is as follows:

I heard and noticed Officer Hare sounding panicked. I asked him if he was OK. He replied “yes” and asked if he had the keys to his patrol car. I asked him why he was asking and what he needed. Officer Hare then asked if he could come and meet him. I asked him where he was and he said he was near Cottonwood. I asked him why he needed me and he said he would let me know when he got there. He said he was very embarrassed.

Within an hour, a supervisor arrived and opened the locked patrol vehicle, after which traces of semen were reportedly found on the belt Hare had been wearing that night.

The Internal Affairs and Communications Division opened an investigation into the incident last month. Hare has denied having an inappropriate relationship with the suspect and has maintained that she had a medical condition and that he had parked his patrol car and climbed into the back seat to check on her.

“I was trying to wake her up when I noticed the door was closed. That’s when I tried to open the door,” he told the New York Post.

Hare decided to resign the day before he was due to be interviewed for a second time on the allegations, which police have denied, and it is unclear whether he will be charged in connection with the incident.
