Rodeo star Spencer Wright’s family hopes to wean three-year-old off breathing tube

The initial prognosis for 3-year-old Levi Wright, the son of champion equestrian Spencer Wright, whose horse nearly drowned in the Utah River last week, was dire.

But the boy’s family are remaining hopeful and are aiming to remove the breathing tube in the next few days. The boy’s mother, Callie Wright, posted on Facebook yesterday that her “goal” this week was: [Levi] Once extubated, he will be able to breathe on his own.”

His mother said in her letter that her son will undergo another 24-hour EEG test, which measures electrical activity in the brain.

Levi is due to undergo another MRI scan to better understand the damage sustained in the river, and Fox News Digital previously reported that his family was “devastated” after an MRI earlier this week.

“The MRI results were not good,” Levi’s mother wrote in a previous post. “We are devastated but this is only an indication of quality of life. The real story will be revealed by how Levi does over the next few days.”

The boy was believed to be brain dead after falling into the river from a toy tractor on Tuesday. He was found about a mile downstream from his Beaver County home and was flown by helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he has been on a ventilator since then.

Mindy Clark, a friend of the Wright family, who posted updates on social media and spoke to KUTV, said the boy’s mother took her eyes off her son for just a second when she ran into the house to get something.

“[Kallie] A small tractor flipped over I called 911 right away. “We went in the water to look for him,” Clark told the outlet. “I don’t know how long he was in the water, but he had been swept out quite a distance.”

Clark said on Facebook that the family had received an overwhelming amount of support from the community since the tragic accident, and friends organized a charity auction for the family, with hundreds of items up for auction, including the horse which sold for $18,000.

The toddler’s father, 33-year-old Spencer Wright, is a world-ranked saddle bronc rider ranked 40th. His grandfather, Bill Wright, is a member of the Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame. Spencer and his three brothers made history in 2014 when all four qualified to compete in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Wright ultimately won.
