“After years of this going on, all four of us who fired Sam came to the conclusion that we couldn’t believe what he was telling us,” Toner said. “And that’s a completely ineffective position for a board, especially since the board is supposed to provide independent oversight of the company and not just assist the CEO. “It’s just impossible not to take the word of the CEO, who is your main conduit to the company and your main source of information about the company,” she added. Toner said two executives came to the board to discuss their concerns about not being able to trust Altman and the toxic atmosphere he had created, which they called “emotional abuse.”
She said: “They tried to minimise what they told us but these were not casual conversations, they were serious enough to send us screenshots and documentation of several instances where he had actually lied and manipulated people in different situations.”

Toner said Altman’s conduct “really undermined our ability to trust him” and that the dynamic had deteriorated to the point that in October the board was “already having some pretty serious discussions about whether we needed to fire him.”
According to Altman, the board found that OpenAI employees were “afraid” to speak out against him and that some had been retaliated against for criticizing him. As a result, the board fired Altman and announced his dismissal on November 17, 2024.
