Doug Engle, founding member and lead singer of Iron Butterfly, has passed away at the age of 78.
Fox News Digital confirmed on Monday that the “In a Gadda Da Vida” singer passed away on May 24. Doug’s son released a statement saying, “My father passed away on the evening of Friday, May 24th, 2024.”
Doug Ingle Jr. continued, “This is a great loss and has created a rift in our family’s world and will be difficult to navigate as we navigate this new reality. My dad was an incredible man to know and be around.”

“He had a comical wit and was always quick to respond, making laughter flow naturally and sometimes making serious conversations difficult. We will miss him,” the statement continued.

Doug’s son also provided a snapshot of the original announcement, which he shared on his Facebook page.
“It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my father, Doug Ingle. He passed away peacefully this evening with his family by his side,” Ingle Jr. wrote.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Doug was the last surviving member of Iron Butterfly, which formed in San Diego, California in 1966. The band’s drummer, Ron Busey, passed away in 2021 at the age of 79. Bassist Lee Dorman passed away in 2012 at the age of 70, and the band’s guitarist, Eric Bran, passed away in 2003 at the age of 52.

Ingle remained a member of the rock band until 1970, when the band released the album Metamorphosis, before disbanding the following year in 1971.

The band reformed in the mid-1970s, but without Ingle, but Doug performed with Iron Butterfly on several occasions until his retirement in 1999.
