ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Yankees’ hot starting rotation has suffered its first injury of the season.
The Yankees announced Thursday that Clark Schmidt was placed on the disabled list with a right latitudinal injury prior to the end of their series against the Angels.
Cody Morris was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Schmidt last pitched Sunday against the Padres, allowing just two runs (one earned) over five innings, and was scheduled to pitch again Saturday against the Giants, but that will no longer happen.
Schmidt said after Sunday’s game that it was a tough one.
“It was one of those games where we just kind of pushed ourselves a little bit physically and we just felt like we weren’t at our best,” Schmidt said Sunday.
Schmidt posted a 2.52 ERA through his first 11 starts and has continued to grow and mature as a full-time starter.
He broke the previous record last season by pitching a career-high 159 innings while staying healthy.
The Yankees have been without ace Gerrit Cole since spring training because of neuritis in his right elbow, but the rotation remains a strength with Luis Gil playing well in his place.
With Cole not expected to return until at least the end of June, the Yankees will need to fill another hole.
