Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., slammed former President Trump’s guilty verdict in the hush money trial, adding late Thursday that most people “cannot afford to fight these issues.”
“It’s horrible. What this case shows is that they can go after a former president on these ridiculous charges and get a conviction. They can go after anyone,” Rubio, a possible running mate for Trump in November’s presidential election, told Fox News’ “Hannity.”
“And most people can’t afford to fight these diseases.”
Rubio also said he believes the left is targeting Trump in an attempt to remove him from office.
“It’s shocking that something like this could happen in America,” Rubio said, adding that the sentence was an “ugly stain.” [for the] It has gained a reputation all over the world.”
Rubio’s comments came just hours after a 12-juror New York jury made history by convicting Trump on 34 felony counts.
The ruling plunges the 2024 presidential election into uncharted territory, and as both sides grapple with how to proceed, Trump, along with his aides, began raising funds for the case immediately after the ruling was announced.
Rubio Posted a link On the social media platform X, he wrote on a fundraising page, urging his followers to “Don’t just be angry about this tragedy, get revenge!” The donation page crashed, and the Trump campaign said it was because of an influx of donations.
The Florida senator is rumored to be on President Trump’s running mate list. The senator and other potential VP candidates for the former president have criticized the case for weeks but rushed to his defense after the verdict.
In an interview with Fox News, Rubio argued that a conviction might actually help Trump in the polls.
“I think it’s good politically. Unfortunately, I think they’ve made a travesty, a mockery of our criminal justice system,” he said.
