London mayor says he wants Super Bowl to come to city: ‘Really important for us’

This weekend, one of the biggest sporting events of the year will take place at Wembley Stadium in London, with Real Madrid facing Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said on Thursday he wants to make London the “sports capital of the world” and that this summer will be a good testing ground for him.

After this weekend’s soccer matches, the city will also host Major League Baseball, the Wimbledon Championships, Olympic warm-up matches and other premier sports throughout the summer.

Khan has plenty of other hopes, including America’s sporting extravaganza, the Super Bowl.

“The Super Bowl is really important to us, and we want to have it here because we have a lot of American football games and we want American sports fans in Europe to not only go to the States but also come to London to watch the game,” Khan said, via The Athletic, adding that he also hopes to host WrestleMania.

The National Football League (NFL) first visited London in 2007 when the New York Giants defeated the Miami Dolphins 13–10 at Wembley Stadium. It was the first NFL game to be played outside North America.

London has hosted at least one NFL game every year except 2020, and multiple games every year since 2013. The most games played in the city were four in 2017 and 2019.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have visited the site every year since 2013, playing two games there in each of the past two seasons.

However, the Super Bowl has never been held outside the U.S. Although WWE has a global reach, including pay-per-view, WrestleMania has never been held outside North America. While the event has been held 38 times in the U.S. and twice in Canada, it hasn’t been held since 2002.
