Travis Kelce and the Chiefs made their long-awaited return to the White House on Friday to celebrate their second consecutive Super Bowl victory.
Wearing a brown suit, the star tight end posed for photos with teammates and President Joe Biden during Kansas City’s overtime victory celebration in Washington, DC.
He even got the chance to speak at Biden’s invitation, pulling off a prank he tried at last year’s gala.
“My fellow Americans,” he said, “I’m going to be honest with you, President Biden, because they told me that if I come here I’ll be tasered, and I’m going back to my place.”
The joke drew laughter from the audience.
Kelsey’s brother Jason also expressed his excitement on social media.
“No, I’m not gonna lie. It was tough. Good job. translation:“It doesn’t get any cooler than this!” the former Eagles center wrote to X.
A year ago, the Chiefs tight end approached the microphone at the podium and said, “So this is what I’ve been waiting for,” before being interrupted by quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The nine-time Pro Bowl player detailed his big plans during a June 2023 episode of “New Heights,” a podcast he co-hosts with his brother, former Eagles center Jason Kelce.
“Obviously it’s iconic to see a president stand at a podium and address the nation: ‘To the American people,’ and that’s all I wanted to say,” Kelsey said.
Led by the 34-year-old Kelce, the Chiefs won their third Super Bowl title in five seasons in February, defeating the 49ers 25-22 in overtime in Las Vegas.
He then celebrated his victory on the field at Allegiant Stadium with his family and his girlfriend, pop superstar Taylor Swift.
Swift, 34, is continuing the European leg of her hit “Hellas Tour,” which wrapped up with two shows in Madrid on Thursday, but did not attend Friday’s show.
There has been heightened conversation surrounding the Chiefs’ visit this year following controversial comments made by kicker Harrison Butker during a recent commencement speech at Benedictine University in Kansas.
The NFL veteran made headlines by slamming Biden’s stance on abortion and urging women to embrace the role of housewives.
While Mahomes and Kelce praised Butker’s character amid the furore, both distanced themselves from Butker’s views.
“His views and his [Benedictine College] “The commencement speech was his,” Kelsey said on “New Heights” last week. “I can say I agree with most of it, almost all of it, except that he loves his family and his kids. I don’t think we should judge him on his views, especially his religious views on how to live life. That’s not who I am.”
Butker also attended Friday, but Biden did not mention him or his criticisms in his speech.
The president also mentioned star tackle Chris Jones, general manager Brett Veach, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and passing game coordinator Joe Breymaier, the last three of whom are graduates of Biden’s alma mater, the University of Delaware.
The Chiefs will open the season on Thursday, September 5, at home against the Ravens in an AFC Championship rematch, beginning their quest for a third consecutive Super Bowl victory.
