Gable Steveson’s surprise Bills signing comes with WWE diss

A former wrestling rival of Gable Steveson has criticized the former Olympic gold medalist for signing with the NFL.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday that the Bills signed Steveson, who was recently released from his WWE contract, to play on the defensive line.

Trevor Lee, who performed as Cameron Grimes in WWE’s developmental organization NXT and was recently fired by the company, jumped off the top rope to criticize Steveson’s work ethic.

It wasn’t immediately clear from Schefter’s original tweet after Ringer Wrestling podcaster Kazeem Famuide asked what position Steveson would play. Lee replied“Which one do you think requires the least effort and makes the other look good? Wait, that’s a different sport….”

Lee and Steveson faced off in an untelevised bout in January, which featured Steveson making celebratory taunts towards Lee that were completely unrelated to the storyline of the bout.

Mr Lee was perplexed by the decision and threw up his hands in a look of mixed disdain and confusion.

Steveson ultimately won the squash match.

Steveson, who won a gold medal in the 12-kilogram freestyle wrestling division at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, had never played organized football before signing with the Bills.

“I’ve been fortunate to compete at the highest level of my sport, but I’m looking forward to the challenge of seeing how my wrestling skills can apply to football,” he told ESPN. “I’m grateful to my coaches. [Sean] McDermott, [GM] I would like to thank Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills organization for this opportunity.”
