The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has withdrawn an award it had planned to give to liberal actor Robert De Niro following his anti-Trump rant outside the courthouse where President Trump’s so-called hush money lawsuit is being heard.

On Friday, the group announced it was revoking the award, citing NAB’s “proudly bipartisan” views.

NAB had originally planned to present De Niro with the NAB Leadership Foundation’s Service to America Award on Tuesday.

“This event is proudly bipartisan, bringing people from all political walks of life together to celebrate the impactful work of our local broadcasters and partners,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “While we strongly support the right of all Americans to exercise free speech and participate in civic affairs, it is clear that Mr. De Niro’s recent high-profile activities are a distraction from the philanthropic work we hoped to recognize. In order to maintain the focus on the service of our honorees, Mr. De Niro will no longer be attending the event.”

De Niro released a statement after it was announced that he would be stripped of NAB’s highest individual honour.

“I support the work of the NAB Leadership Foundation and want to express my gratitude for all it has done and continues to do for all of us, and I wish the Foundation continued great work,” he said.

Representing the Biden campaign, the actor held an impromptu press conference outside a Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday, attended by lawyers for the 45 defendants.Number President Donald Trump was making his final arguments of the day.

During his visit, the 80-year-old told reporters that Trump “want to create total chaos” and “not just destroy the city.”

“I hope this new ad campaign reaches outside the bubble and reminds my supporters how dangerous he is to our lives. This is not a threat. This is our reality. That’s why I joined the Biden-Harris campaign: because the only way we can protect our freedoms and preserve our humanity is to vote for Joe Biden for president,” De Niro said outside the courthouse.

“I owe a lot to this city, which is why it’s so strange to have Donald Trump across the street. He doesn’t belong in my city. I don’t know where he doesn’t belong, but he certainly doesn’t belong here,” he continued. “We New Yorkers tolerated him when he was just a dirty real estate con man masquerading as a tycoon.”
