Hunter Biden owes his ex-wife $2.9 million after a drawn-out legal battle, and now his former spouse is expected to be a key witness in his looming trial.
Kathleen Buhl, who was married to her eldest son for 24 years before divorcing him in 2017, claims Hunter has been behind on agreed-upon child support, attorney’s fees, interest and other debts for years.
Buhle sued Hunter in 2019, shortly after Hunter married his current wife, Melissa Cohen.
The dispute with Buhle has simmered in a Washington, D.C. court for years, and in 2021 Hunter was found to have violated his divorce settlement.
Buhl, the mother of three of Hunter’s five children, is scheduled to be on stage when Hunter goes on federal trial next week for illegal gun possession and again in September when Hunter goes on trial on tax evasion charges.
This dispute Mentioned Special Counsel David Weiss’s indictment on Biden’s tax evasion charges.
Their separation agreement stipulated that Hunter would pay Buhl $37,000 a month and 50 percent of any income over $875,000 a year, according to the court. The documents were obtained by Axios.
But Buhle’s side alleges Hunter failed to make payments on assets he owned in 2017 and 2018. They allege Hunter made more than $2 million per year during that time. Hunter’s lawyers told Axios that child support payments stopped altogether after Hunter filed his lawsuit.
The situation was caused by Hunter’s descent into drug addiction, his lawyers said, but the cash continued to be moved slowly even after Hunter recovered, Buhl’s lawyers said in court documents in April 2023, according to the outlet.
“Buehle has previously stated in this case that the financial and emotional toll this case has caused her is enormous and seemingly never-ending, and that sentiment has not changed,” her lawyer, Wendy Schwartz, said in a statement to Axios.
This isn’t the first time Hunter Biden has tried to skimp on the women in his life.
Hunter Biden has a child with former stripper Lunden Roberts, but denied it for years until a paternity test confirmed he was the father.
Throughout 2023, he was famously caught up in a courtroom altercation with his baby mama after she tried to reduce his child support payments. They eventually settled in June 2023.
