Former President Donald Trump could be barred from entering the UK, Canada and other countries if his felony conviction is upheld.
Last week, a 12-person jury in Manhattan convicted the former president on 34 counts of falsifying records to bribe porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election. The former president is likely to appeal the conviction, but it is unclear whether the verdict will be overturned before the November election. If the former president wins the election before the conviction is overturned, some countries will have to make exceptions for his official visits. Independent:
About 40 countries, including Canada and the UK, have strict policies regarding the entry of people with criminal records, and unless special consideration is given to Trump, the same standards will apply to him. It is unclear whether he will be allowed into the country if he wins the presidential election in November and remains a felon.
According to the Canadian government’s tourism centre, “U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a felony conviction on their criminal record may be deemed inadmissible to Canada for immigration purposes and may be ineligible to enter the country even if they are simply visiting.”
Under British law, felons can visit Ireland and Scotland, subject to certain restrictions and conditions, but the UK can ban convicted felons from entering the country.
Many other countries, including Israel and Australia, have laws regarding felons visiting their countries that could be interpreted as being subject to challenge if the former president wins this November’s election.
The big question now is whether a guilty verdict will be enough to tip the tide from former President Trump to Biden ahead of the election on November 5. Accurate polls on the matter will take at least a week, but Karl Rove, a mainstream Republican who has previously criticized Trump, said on Fox News last week that a guilty verdict could cost Trump important swing votes in key states such as Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.
“If he is convicted, we should not underestimate the problem.” Said Karl Rove.
“Think about that: 11% are less likely to vote for him in Michigan, where Donald Trump is up half a percentage point in the RealClearPolitics average, in Pennsylvania, where he’s up 2%, in Wisconsin, where he’s up three-tenths of a percent,” Rove continued. “So in the close races that we’re likely to face, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11% of voters are less likely to vote for you, that’s a problem.”
Nevertheless, the former president has not lost the support of his ardent supporters, and raised $53 million in campaign funds just 24 hours after his conviction.
