Katy Perry edits Harrison Butker speech into pro LGBTQ lecture

Katy Perry marked the start of Pride Month with a not-so-blatant social media criticism of Harrison Butker.

Kansas City Chiefs player Butker drew criticism last month for his speech at Benedictine University’s graduation ceremony, in which he covered a wide range of topics, including abortion, the coronavirus, President Biden and women’s choice.

Perry shared an edited video of Butker’s speech with her 200 million social media followers, captioning it, “I edited this for my daughters, graduates and gay people. You can do anything. Congratulations and happy proud.”

“To the women here today, congratulations on your incredible achievements. You should be so proud of all you’ve accomplished in your young lives,” Butker said in an edited video shared on Perry’s account. “As you walk across this stage right now, how many of you are thinking about the promotions and titles that are ahead of you in your career?”

“I predict that the women here today will have successful careers in the world. I tell you this because I have seen it firsthand. As I cheer you on, I would be happier if the majority of you didn’t tell me that what you are most excited about is marriage and the children you will bring into the world.”

Chiefs guard Travis Kelce defended Harrison Butker as a “great person and a great teammate” despite their differences.

In Perry’s edited video, he continued, “The future is bright. Things are changing. Society is transitioning and embracing diversity, equity and inclusion for people young and old. With that being said, I want to say Happy Pride Month to you all. Congratulations to the Class of 2024!”

Perry didn’t take kindly to any of the praise or criticism and even turned off comments on her Instagram post. “American Idol” Staples announced earlier this year that he would be retiring from the role after seven seasons as a judge at the end of season 22.

Butker’s speech last month sparked outrage for a variety of reasons, but it was one line in which he called out the women in his graduating class and asked them to embrace their “calling” as “housewives.” It resonates with many people.

The part of Butker’s speech that caught everyone’s attention was to tell the women graduating: “The most important title is housewife.”

“To the women in attendance today, congratulations on your incredible achievements. You should be proud of all you have accomplished in your young lives. I want to speak to you directly and briefly because I believe women have been told the greatest lie of all. How many of you sitting here right now, about to cross this stage, are thinking about the promotions and titles you will have in your careers?” he said.

“While some of you will have successful careers around the world, for the vast majority of you, the thing you are most excited about is marriage and the children that lie ahead. My beautiful wife, Isabel, will be the first to say that her life truly began when she began fulfilling her calling as a wife and mother.”

He continued, “I am standing on this stage today and who I am because I have a wife who is dedicated to her calling. I am blessed with many God-given talents, but I cannot stress enough that I owe all of my success to a girl I met in middle school band class who came to faith and became my wife and one of my most important roles: a homemaker.”
