Ravi Shastri is conducting the toss in New York, which might just be the peak of human existence. South Africa’s captain Aiden Markram calls incorrectly, so Sri Lanka have won the toss. Wanindu Hasaranga says they will bat first; no surprise given he is one of four spinners, full- and part-time, in their XI.

Important Events

Round 6: Sri Lanka 24-1 (Kusal 11, Kamindu 7) Kamindu hits the ball off Baatman and hits a single, it’s one of those mistimed strokes so maybe the pitch was a bit too quick, who knows!

Kusal was beaten by successive leg-cutters from the impressive Baatman, then survived a big LBW appeal for shoving away a big off-cutter that should have bounced past the stumps. This looks like a Test match, not a T20. Kusal decided he had to do something and raced down the track to hit Baatman’s last ball twice past mid-off. He was poorly timed and the fielder was intrigued for a moment, but he hit it back well enough.

5th innings: Sri Lanka 21-1 (Kusal 9, Kamindu 6) The left-hander was beaten by an outswing from Rabada, who replaced Jansen in the batting, but then picked up the ball beautifully over square leg and bounced it for four – what should have been a six.

It is important for Sri Lanka to keep a cool head and not go for too many unrealistic scores, even something like 130 would be competitive here, who knows what it would mean for the spinners.

4th over: Sri Lanka 14-1 (Kusal 8, Kamindu 0) Apparently Baartman was the first South African to take a wicket with the first ball in a World Cup. Alan Donald might disagree..

It was a superb first over from Baartman, a wicket maiden in fact, with the only score being a leg bye.

Wickets! Sri Lanka 13-1 (Nissanka c Klaassen b Baartman 3)

Ottoneir Baartmann takes his first ball of the World Cup! Nissanka bowls a length ball down to third man, and Heinrich Klaassen crouches down for an easy catch.

3rd over: Sri Lanka 13-0 (Nissanka 3, Kusal 8) Sri Lanka’s openers seem a little wary of the new pitch. Kusal fumbles Jansen and then gets two with a cover drive. The wide ground and slightly slower outfield are not conducive to the batsmen, so the par score may be lower than we think.

share

2nd over: Sri Lanka 9-0 (Nisanka 2, Kusal 6) Kusal Mendis uppercut Rabada’s first ball with some bounce for four. He was given out twice later in the over, once on either side of the bat, a strong start for South Africa.

1st innings: Sri Lanka 2-0 (Nissanka 1, Kusal 1) Left-hander Marco Jansen started very well, conceding just two runs and striking out Nissanka with successive deliveries. The second was off a length ball to Jafa and the pitch looked good enough for the fast bowlers early on.

Outside the stadium in Nassau County, the entrance has been turned into a military zone. I’ve never seen such a heavy security and police presence at a sporting event in the New York metropolitan area. Fans and media are advised to arrive here two to three hours early.

Sri Lanka won the toss and bat

Ravi Shastri is in charge of the toss in New York, a place that may well be the pinnacle of human existence. Sri Lanka won the toss after South African captain Aiden Markram made a wrong decision. preamble

Spread the news. There’s a cricket match today: Sri Lanka vs South Africa at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Long Island. It’s an interesting match because the open group also includes Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Netherlands, who beat South Africa in the last two white-ball World Cups.

South Africa are favourites to win, and they have to be prepared to die, and hide from their dreadful midfield defence, but the past is not over yet, and it won’t be over until they win the World Cup.

Sri Lanka have the talent, personality and versatility, especially in bowling, to trouble bigger teams in the group stages and in the Super Eights. It should be a great match. And even if it isn’t, the fact that it’s being played in New York will be a story in itself.

The match will kick off at 3:30pm.10:30 a.m. New York time.
