Orioles’ Jorge Mateo forced to leave game after bizarre accident near on-deck circle with teammate

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins and infielder Jorge Mateo were involved in a freak on-deck circle incident during Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

As Mullins was preparing to step up to bat, Mateo reached out to grab something at his feet and was hit in the back of the head by Mullins’ bat.

“I was looking at the pitcher and feeling relaxed, so I just stretched in a circle, which was just a normal movement,” Mullins said. “The pitcher was right behind me, so I couldn’t see him.”

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said he expects further updates on Monday.

Mullins made a jumping catch at the wall to stop Johnny DeLuca from getting the out, but he was 0-for-4 at the plate. He’s batting .181 with a .544 OPS and six home runs this season.
