Republicans are capitalizing on former President Trump’s controversial conviction in his criminal trial.
Republicans are aiming to retake their Senate majority in the November elections and are on the offensive in reliably Republican Montana, where Democratic Sen. Jon Tester is fighting for his political life.
Tim Sheehy, the overwhelming front-runner for the Republican nomination in Montana’s primary on Tuesday, will be releasing an ad this week accusing “Jon Tester of supporting a witch hunt against Joe Biden.”
This will be the first time that a ruling in President Trump’s trial will be in the spotlight in a key Senate race.
Trump goes berserk after being found guilty in criminal trial
Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, was found guilty by a New York City jury on Thursday of all 34 felony counts in his case, the first time a former or current president has been put on trial.
Trump is convicted and cashes in on his criminal conviction
The former president has repeatedly claimed the case is a “sham” and “fraudulent” and that it was “prosecuted directly from within the White House and the Department of Justice.”

The ad’s narrator, successful businessman and former Navy SEAL Sheehy, charges that it is “state-sponsored political persecution led by Joe Biden and the radical left. They want to put Trump in jail.”

“Senator Tester is advocating violence against President Trump,” a narrator says, before including footage of an old MSNBC interview in which the senator said someone needs to “punch” Trump in the “face.”
News of the ad was first reported by Politico.
President Trump has endorsed Sheehy, and he has also received strong backing from the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the Senate Republican campaign arm.

The commercial is the latest in a multimillion-dollar ad war over the Montana Senate race, and a Republican strategist in the Senate race said it’s a sign that Republicans are on the offensive in the wake of the Trump ruling, especially in Republican-leaning states like Montana and Ohio, where Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown has also come under intense Republican attack.
Tester spokeswoman Monica Robinson responded to the ad in a statement, saying Sheehy is “an out-of-state billionaire who has been found to have lied about every aspect of his life and is trying to hide the fact that he is running for Senate to serve his own interests, not those of Montana. John will continue to campaign on his record of always fighting for what is best for Montana, including getting President Trump to sign over 20 bills into law.”
