Brother Marquis, a member of the iconic rap group 2 Live Crew, has died at the age of 58, Fox News Digital confirmed Monday.
The cause and circumstances of his death are unknown.
Marquis, whose full name is Mark D. Ross, joined the crew in 1986 as a friend of DJ David Hobbs, aka Mr. Mix.

Hobbs was also part of some of the most famous members of 2 Live Crew, which also included Fresh Kid Ice (Christopher Wong Wong) and Luke Skywalker (Luther Campbell).

The group shared on Instagram that Marquis “passed away” on Monday. No further details were released.

Luther “Luke” Campbell expressed his condolences over Marquis’ death in a tweet shared on X (formerly Twitter).

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of Brother Marquis and my condolences to his family and his many fans around the world,” he wrote. “We fought many battles for culture and made great music together – memories that will never be forgotten.”
“We recently rallied again to recover our stolen catalogue. We will continue to fight in his name and for his family. I know Brother Marquis would want us to celebrate his life and that is exactly what I intend to do. Rest in Peace, my brother.”

The Miami-based group was known for their controversial hits, most notably their smash 1989 album “As Nasty As They Wanna Be.”
The government described the album as “legally obscene”, but the decision was overturned in 1992 by a U.S. Court of Appeals, which found the album to be heavily influenced by African-American cultural and literary traditions.

One of the founding members, Fresh Kid Ice, died in 2017 at the age of 53. Ice, whose real name was Christopher Wong Wong, was considered one of the first Asian rappers to achieve major success in the United States.
He formed the group with Mr. Mix and The Amazing V (Yuri Vierot) and was the only member to feature on every album.
