Two innocent girls, ages 9 and 11, were shot and wounded while playing in a Brooklyn park Monday night by two gunmen who were on the run and aimed at different people, police said.
Police said the two young victims were caught in the crossfire while on their way to spend the night at Hilltop Playground in Brownsville, with one of their mothers watching.
Police said at a late-night press conference outside Dean Street Park that suspects fired at least six shots just after 9 p.m., hitting an 11-year-old girl in the back and another girl in the right leg.
The two girls were transported by private means to Brookdale Hospital and are in stable condition, according to the NYPD.
“Thankfully, both girls are awake, alert and are receiving care from the incredible medical staff at Brookdale Hospital,” said Deputy Chief Scott Henderson, commander of Brooklyn North Patrol Borough.
Police believe the series of shots was fired by two gunmen, based on two types of shell casings found at the scene.
Police said the two men fired shots in the same direction, at unidentified targets, and that the girls were believed to be innocent bystanders.
The New York Police Department is investigating whether the shooting was gang-related but has not determined a motive.
Sources said the gunmen were riding scooters.
No arrests had been made as of late Monday night.
