Lakers, JJ Redick nearing head coaching hiring, per report

The Los Angeles Lakers are on the brink of filling their head coaching vacancy, and a top candidate for the job has emerged. The Lakers fired head coach Darvin Ham after the team was eliminated in the first round of the 2024 NBA playoffs. The team is interviewing a wide range of candidates and is reportedly choosing between Redick and former Charlotte Hornets coach James Borrego. It’s no coincidence that Redick is the leading candidate, and that he has a strong relationship with LeBron James.

James and Redick now do a podcast together. “Pay attention to the game.” The podcast launched a few months ago and has been highly praised for giving fans a unique look into James’ brilliant basketball mind. Redick has been working as a media analyst since retiring in 2021. He is providing commentary for the 2024 NBA Finals.

Redick played 15 years in the NBA after an infamous college career at Duke University. He turns 40 in June.

The Lakers finished last season with a 47-35 record and were the seventh seed in the Western Conference. The team has most of its key players locked in for next year, but will have a decision to make regarding soon-to-be free agent D’Angelo Russell.
