After Chicago overcame a 17-point first-half deficit, New York led 15-2 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu added 24 points and seven rebounds, holding the Sky to a season-low 32.4 percent shooting from the field.
Chicago rookie Angel Reese was ejected after receiving two technical fouls with 2:31 left in the game.
Reese finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, but made just 3 of 12 field goals in the loss.
Liberty dominated the first quarter, shooting 57.9 percent in the quarter and leading 31-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Stewart made 5 of 7 shots, including 2 of 2 three-pointers, to score 15 points and lead his team to the victory.

The Sky outshot Liberty 33-18 in the first quarter and went into halftime trailing 49-48.
After a low-scoring third quarter, Liberty took control in the fourth quarter.
Trailing 66-65 going into the final period, Liberty extended its lead to 80-68 with 6 minutes, 2 seconds left in the game.
They held Chicago to 2-of-16 field goal attempts in the quarter and went on to win.
Carter came off the bench to lead the Sky with 16 points, while Marina Mabry also added 15 and veteran Elizabeth Williams added 10 points.
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton had 14 points and five assists for the Liberty, and the team made 10 of 32 3-pointers.
