Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood Refuses to Boycott Israel

Jonny Greenwood, the legendary lead guitarist for the British rock group Radiohead, released a statement on Tuesday explaining why he continues to work with Israeli artists and criticizing anti-Israel boycotts of Israeli arts and culture.

Greenwood said in a statement.

I disagree with that call. Silencing Israeli filmmakers, musicians and dancers when their work is touring abroad, especially when it is at the behest of fellow Western filmmakers, musicians and artists, does not strike me as progressive, since these people are always going to be the most progressive members of any society.

I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the incredible musicians I’ve met on this project. They all seem to me to be much braver and taking far more principled risks than those who are trying to shut us down or assume there is some sinister ulterior motive behind the band’s existence. There are no ulterior motives. We are musicians who respect a common culture, and I’ve been a part of it for nearly 20 years.

In any case, no art is more “important” than stopping the death and suffering that is happening around us. How can that be? But doing nothing seems like a worse option. And silencing Israeli artists because they were born Jewish in Israel doesn’t seem like a way to achieve understanding between both sides of this never-ending conflict.

As Stereogum I got it.Greenwood is currently touring with Israeli musician Dudu Tassa and is married to an Israeli. Radiohead has performed in Israel many times, most recently with Tassa in Tel Aviv. Greenwood has been seen taking part in anti-government protests in Israel, but these are protests against Prime Minister Netanyahu, not against the war.
