Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas refused to explain why Mexican cartels and smuggling organizations would not exploit loopholes created by President Joe Biden’s new executive order that is supposed to address the ongoing border crisis.
Among the many exceptions, unaccompanied minors who cross the southern border illegally are not included in the 2,500-person threshold that bars people seeking asylum from entering the country except at ports of entry. There are concerns that unaccompanied children will continue to be exploited as the U.S. government accepts them with no questions asked.
Fox News host Neil Cavuto pressed Mayorkas about the loophole, but the Biden appointee had difficulty dodging the question.
“What I don’t understand, Secretary, is that there are many exceptions to this, and unaccompanied children are not an exception. Doesn’t this just give the drug cartels a green light to take advantage of it? And, you know, it just blows up in your face the very purpose of this measure,” Cavuto said.
“Oh, absolutely, absolutely not, Neil,” Mayorkas initially responded.
“Asylum is already prohibited for the majority of migrants who cross the border illegally since Title 42 ended last year, but that hasn’t stopped them from entering the country.”
“But who is going to look after these unaccompanied children and where are they going to be?” Cavuto interjected. “If they are allowed in and they are not going to be deported, then they are not going to do anything like that. So where are they going to go?”
“Neil, we are following our values and treating unaccompanied children humanely. We are stopping illegal immigration. … We are taking on drug cartels with unprecedented strength…” Mayorkas reiterated, without answering Cavuto’s questions.
“Cartels and smuggling rings are evil. They exploit vulnerable individuals of all kinds. We will go after the cartels hard. We have excluded unaccompanied children from this quota because the humanitarian case they present is compelling,” Mayorkas added.
The issue with unaccompanied minors is just one of many problems with Biden’s executive order, the biggest of which is that it does little to stem the flow of illegal immigrants. Another loophole allows anyone who claims a “credible fear” to be allowed through, and the Biden administration has ordered authorities to make it as easy as possible for everyone they encounter to do so.
“And while asylum has already been banned for most migrants crossing the border illegally since Title 42 ended last year, that hasn’t stopped them from coming in, and will be at an all-time high by the end of 2023,” Fox News reporter Bill Melgin said. explanation.
