Starling Marte was out with a knee injury, but Mendoza said the Mets weren’t particularly concerned.
Marte told manager Carlos Mendoza after Tuesday’s win that he “felt something” in his right knee in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Mendoza had Marte back in the lineup on Wednesday, playing him in right field, and said Marte “is still feeling good,” he said.
“Let’s not take any chances here,” Mendoza said before the Mets’ 9-1 win over the Nationals. “Let’s go back and get some treatment.”
Tyrone Taylor was inserted into right field and had one hit in four at-bats, with three bases.
Losing Marte’s bat has been a loss for the Mets. Over his past six games, he has 10 hits in 22 at-bats, three walks, two doubles and six RBIs.
Francisco Alvarez served as the designated hitter for High-A Brooklyn on Wednesday and was hitless in three at-bats with one walk.
The rehabbing catcher will join Triple-A Syracuse and play two full games in consecutive games on Friday and Saturday before appearing as a designated hitter on Sunday in his final training session before returning to the major leagues.
Alvarez threw a combined no-hitter Tuesday in Brooklyn.
“It’s pretty cool,” said Mendoza, who spoke with Alvarez after the fight. “He was super excited. I got the debrief from the coaches and the first thing they said was, ‘What a special guy.'”
“He talked to all the pitchers before the game and during the game and really took it on. His energy and obviously the way he goes about the game.”
Edwin Diaz, who threw 21 pitches on Tuesday, “looked good” on Wednesday, Mendoza said.
Diaz, who has been sidelined with a right shoulder injury, is scheduled to pitch one inning at High-A Brooklyn on Thursday.
The Mets added catcher Joe Hudson to their 40-man roster, allowing them to add the veteran catcher, who plays for Triple-A Syracuse, to the active roster if the Mets have a 27th player available in London.
The Mets will also be acquiring right-handed pitchers Cole Sulcer and Brett Batey from across the pond.
Their 27th player needs to be a position player, so it will likely be either Beatty or Hudson.
If injuries create an opening on the pitching staff, Sulcer will be on the bench.
Omar Narvaez and Jorge Lopez, who were designated designated players last week, were waived.
Right-handed pitcher Shintaro Fujinami (right shoulder strain) has been placed on the 60-day disabled list.
