Mike Brey talks Dan Hurley and Lakers rumors
Current Hawks assistant coach and former Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey talks about the rumors surrounding Dan Hurley and the Los Angeles Lakers on OutKick’s “Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich.”
Dan Hurley is faced with a tough decision.
The University of Connecticut men’s basketball head coach is reportedly the front-runner to replace Darvin Ham with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Hurley coached the Huskies to back-to-back national championships and dominant performances in both March Madness tournaments, with the closest game in either tournament being decided by just 13 points.

But former college head coach Mike Brey, now an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks, understands the interest.
“He’s got to think about it, that’s for sure,” he told Outkick’s Dan Dakich. “One of his traits is he’s really confident and a little crazy. That’s what makes him great. So he might challenge that. That crazy part is what makes him really different and unique and great. He’s a New Jersey, I-95, East Coast, Big East guy. Frankly, I don’t think he cares that much about money. One of the great lines he said during the tournament was, ‘I’m just a high school coach who got lucky.’ I agree…
“I know, it’s super sexy, but he’s really an East Coast guy.”

But Brey knows how tough it can be to leave a college program. He coached at Notre Dame for 23 seasons before joining the Hawks last year.
“To show your guys your loyalty and that you’re with the team, you have to look them in the eye and say you can’t do it, you can’t do it,” Brey said. “I just told them, ‘We’re in this together, we’re going to get it done.'”
“People who don’t coach don’t understand that. The coaches have sold you on it, and now you’ve got to look them in the eye and say, ‘Hey, guess what?’ It’s hard.”
The Lakers were also rumored to be targeting JJ Redick as their next head coach. Athletic The team is “targeting” the former Duke University star to take the reins, the report said Tuesday.
Redick said on “Gojo & Golic” on Wednesday that he plans to address the Lakers’ situation after the playoffs are over. Nothing has been made official yet.

The Lakers parted ways with Darvin Ham after two seasons of playoff success. Ham had a second consecutive winning season with a 90-74 record. Los Angeles reached the Western Conference Finals in Ham’s first season with the team.
