Howard University announced Friday that it had revoked an honorary degree awarded to Sean “Diddy” Combs by a unanimous vote of its board of trustees.
The decision comes in response to a recently released video showing the rapper assaulting his ex-girlfriend in a hotel, which the university determined was fundamentally incompatible with its core values.

“The Howard University Board of Trustees today unanimously approved the return of Sean Combs’ honorary degree awarded to him in 2014,” a university spokesman said. Fox DC. “This acceptance results in the cancellation of all honors and privileges associated with the degree. Accordingly, the Board of Trustees has directed that his name be removed from all documents listing Howard University honorary degree recipients.”
The university’s decision came after Rolling Stone magazine published an article detailing allegations that Combs had abused a girlfriend on campus in the late 1980s. A former Howard University student, Combs dropped out after two years in 1990. He received an honorary doctorate and delivered the commencement speech in 2014.
Diddy has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks after a video surfaced of him hitting his son. Ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura In a hotel hallway in 2016.

The rapper apologized in May, calling his actions “unforgivable,” but never named Ventura.
