
Long Island residents and beachgoers hoping to hit the coast on Sunday should expect major delays as several major roads in Nassau County will be closed. Closed for the Cricket World Cup on sunday.
India and Pakistan will face off at Eisenhower Park at 10:30 am on Sunday in what will be the biggest match of the ICC Cricket Men’s T20 World Cup in the US.
The cricket stadium is near Hempstead Turnpike and traffic disruptions are expected throughout the day. Several nearby roads are closed. For the match.
The high-profile match between one of sports’ fiercest rivalries will also see stepped-up security and worsening traffic congestion.
A New York Police Department spokesman said the tournament and related events in the Big Apple could be seen by extremists as an opportunity for violence.
“The recent pro-ISIS propaganda with specific reference to the upcoming match between India and Pakistan at this major event raises concerns and reinforces the need for increased vigilance among security partners,” the bulletin said.
Nassau County Police Chief Patrick Ryder said the World Cup received threats linked to ISIS-K in April, as well as more specific threats linked to the India-Pakistan match.
Cricket World Cup matches between India and Pakistan are among the most-watched sporting events in the world. The last time the two teams faced each other in T20 cricket (shortened version) was in 2022.
Gov. Kathy Hawkle said she had directed New York State Police to step up enforcement and security at the event.

Park Boulevard (Eisenhower Park) will be closed in both directions on Sunday from 6:30am to 6pm, and the park will also be closed to the public for the duration of the tournament.
Police said Merrick Avenue from Hempstead Turnpike to Charles Lindbergh Boulevard will be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. During that time, only local traffic will be allowed from Stewart Avenue southbound to Charles Lindbergh Boulevard.
According to police, the eastbound side of Charles Lindbergh Boulevard will be closed from Earl Ovington Boulevard from 4:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., but the westbound side will be open all day from the Meadowbrook State Parkway ramp.
James Doolittle Boulevard will be closed from the Marriott’s main entrance to Charles Lindbergh Boulevard from 4:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Hempstead Turnpike and Earl Ovington Boulevard will remain open in both directions.
Tournament officials are urging participants to park their cars at the Nassau Coliseum and take shuttle buses to the tournament site.
The 11-week World Cup tournament will be played at venues across the country, including eight matches scheduled for the 34,000-seat Long Island Stadium, according to the International Cricket Council.
Matches will be held at the stadium until June 12th.
