Alex Rodriguez has a simple plan for the Mets.
But it came at the expense of his former team.
Before the Yankees played the Dodgers on Saturday, manager Kevin Burkhart asked on Fox: “How would you improve the Mets?”
Rodriguez had one player in mind.
“The Red Sox broke the curse by getting this guy,” Rodriguez said, pointing to David Ortiz. “Today, ‘this guy’ is Juan Soto. They take three years to get Juan Soto and start again.”
Derek Jeter was quick to chime in.
“[Yankees owner] “Hal Steinbrenner will say something about that,” Jeter said.
Soto is having an excellent first season with the Yankees, but is notable for being a set free agent after the season.
He began the season with a setback, missing the Yankees’ final two games with inflammation in his left forearm.
Manager Aaron Boone didn’t rule out the possibility of placing Soto on injured reserve Saturday, but the injury is not expected to be serious.
Before suggesting the Mets should make every effort to sign Soto this offseason, Rodriguez warned his former team, the Yankees, that Mets owner Steve Cohen “can outbid anyone” and warned the Yankees not to even put Soto on the open market.
“I always say this: If you’re dating a woman you love and you want to marry her, don’t let her become a free agent. I feel the same way about Juan Soto,” Rodriguez said on “The Michael Kay Show” on Friday. “Don’t let him become a free agent. Make him your best offer and your best bet now. Don’t wait for him to become a free agent.”
Before Rodriguez shared his plans, Ortiz offered a suggestion that Mets fans themselves would likely disagree with.
“I’m going to Oklahoma,” Ortiz joked. “There’s too much pressure here in New York. If I’m going to play under the shadow of the Yankees, I’m going to Oklahoma.”
