Disney’s ‘Doctor Who’ Airs Character’s First Gay Kiss After Bob Iger Vows to Dial Down Wokeness

Sci-Fi Show Doctor Who“Star Wars,” available exclusively on Disney+, aired the title characters’ first gay kissing scene just days after Disney CEO Bob Iger told worried investors the company would tone down its extreme “woke” messaging.

Ncuti Gatwa, the gay actor who took over as the Doctor in the latest season of the long-running show (which was once considered a children’s show), is depicted engaging in a homosexual affair with guest star Jonathan Groff in this week’s episode.Glee, Mindhunter).

In the seventh episode of the 2024 season, “Rogue”, a time-travelling Doctor emerges in Bath, England in 1813, pursuing a shape-shifting alien race called the Tuldar, who steal people’s likeness and lives. Along the way, the Doctor meets a space bounty hunter called “Rogue” (Groff), to whom he becomes sexually attracted.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Doctor Who The series isn’t the only one to have gone down this path. This season, the series reunited with openly gay former showrunner Russell T. Davies (Showtime’s Queer as Folk), and has promised to include such storylines in the show.

When they first meet, the two flirt with each other and Rogue threatens to kill the Doctor, believing him to be the killer Tuldar, but the two soon join forces to hunt down the man-killing monster. Rogue also acknowledges at one point that he has lost a male lover, giving his character a tragic side.

The two eventually get close enough to kiss, but this isn’t the first time the Doctor has locked lips with another character. In fact, the Doctor has had girlfriends and wives in the past, but he has never been sexually involved with a man until now, except for one openly gay character, Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), who first appeared in 2005. As PinkNews points out, Harkness A kiss goodbye She appeared in the 2005 season finale with the Doctor and his female companion.

As well as the (romantic) gay kiss in the new episode, there is also a scene where Rogue and the Doctor perform a ballroom dance while the aristocrats in attendance look on in shock – all this in England in 1813. The scene ends with Rogue on one knee offering the Doctor a ring as a marriage vow. Of course, the lewd dance scene was a trap for Tuldur.

The episode ends with Rogue sacrificing himself to send Tuldar into the other dimension to save the Doctor’s companion Ruby, but it’s clear the writers had left a loophole to bring Rogue back if they wanted.

In 2022, Disney+ “Global Home” of Doctor Who The show is now available to audiences outside the UK after Disney bought the rights to all episodes.

But the gay-themed storyline came just months after Disney CEO Bob Iger promised to tone down the hyper-wokeness that has threatened Disney’s once-unshakeable reputation as a children’s and family entertainment destination.

However, Iger’s memo does not appear to have been passed on to the company’s creative department.
